Gain ace status in just a few minutes with a malfunctioning aircraft? WOW! No wonder he is so remembered. And yes, he was "just doing my job." Superior training superior weaponry and the willingness to do the job shows up in our fighting forces.

I don't mean to take anything away from the heroism and skill of Alex Vraciu, but American air power at the time was overwhelming. By that time (or perhaps a little later), the Japanese pilot dearth was so alarming that they were training a high percentage of their young recruits as kamikaze pilots--how to take off and fly but with little emphasis on landing their planes. They just had to fly out of the sun and point them at American ships, hoping they could strike a blow for the Emperor.

Another true hero, "“because I didn’t think I was coming back. A lot of us didn’t," just doing his job. An amazingly common theme. Thank you, Tara Ross!

There were true heros! My uncle was a Medic in the Navy and I remember the stories he shared of his time in the South Pacific!

This is a story that movies are made of. Thank you Tara. Alexander Vraciu was certainly an American Hero. He and his fellow aviators were brave and skilled and when the odds of not returning were great, they went anyway. Their loyalty to their mission and their country was unmatched which is why they were known as the Greatest Generation. A nation that fought together. From the civilian housewives to the infantryman, this was a fighting nation, staffed by a common cause and I thank God for the Greatest Generation and for the spirit of cohesiveness that was my youth.

God bless Alexander Vraciu and God bless all who serve or have served this great nation.

Alex Vraciu was a lucky pilot indeed. One wing flipping up and instead of shooting down 6 Japanese planes he would have been probably meeting Davy Jones in the Pacific Ocean. but alas he was lucky and having 19 kills was an amazing feat indeed. Thank you Alex for your service and thank you Tara Ross for bring us the light hearted tale today.

God Bless America!!!

Greatest generation! They risked their lives (many gave all) for their love of country!!! Sad today many Americans hate their country because they have not been taught the truth about it!! Start teaching the truth starting with MOH winners!

Vraciu did what needed to be done at great risk to himself. So did many other pilots. They knew the danger, but went anyway. Wouldn’t it be great if every generation produced that kind of fighter? I don’t think it’s beyond possibility, but it takes some good parenting and other adults that kids can look up to and teaching the kids by example. Awesome story, Tara.
