Gain ace status in just a few minutes with a malfunctioning aircraft? WOW! No wonder he is so remembered. And yes, he was "just doing my job." Superior training superior weaponry and the willingness to do the job shows up in our fighting forces.

I don't mean to take anything away from the heroism and skill of Alex Vraciu, but American air power at the time was overwhelming. By that time (or perhaps a little later), the Japanese pilot dearth was so alarming that they were training a high percentage of their young recruits as kamikaze pilots--how to take off and fly but with little emphasis on landing their planes. They just had to fly out of the sun and point them at American ships, hoping they could strike a blow for the Emperor.
