The Medal of Honor Museum opened this week near the Cowboys stadium in Arlington, TX. My favorite Medal story is when they tried to revoked Medals at the turn of the previous century given to Army civilian scouts. The widow of Billy Dixon wouldn't surrender his for action at Buffalo Waller. His action at Adobe Walls is legendary too.
The only woman to have received the MOH retained and proudly wore hers even though it was included on that list to recall the medals. I am glad they did not give them up.
Great post, Tara! It’s important to know the history of different types of recognition like the Medal of Honor. By increasing our understanding our respect for those receiving the recognition grows. It symbolizes more than just a medal. There is a real person behind each one and a family that stands with them and in some cases mourns their loss.
I am personally glad for the restrictive acts of courage to be honored by this award, my only regret is that there are countless acts of bravery from many brave men not recognized due to the fact that there were no survivors to report their actions. God knows however and there is heavenly rewards for them.
It is appropriate for the Medal of Honor should have a holiday because of those who have been awarded this recognition of valor and selflessness of those who received it. Thanks for sharing this, Tara Ross.
Thank you Tara. You help your readers celebrate the individual men and women who have been awarded the MOH every week on Monday and sometimes more often. I find that it makes me feel better and I have renewed pride with every MOH story I read. Pride in my fellow man and Pride in this great nation. So today, I celebrate National Medal of Honor day and I hope that others gain Pride and honor in our warriors and the United States of America. I also sense that God has a hand in each story that you publish. Thank you again Tara.
So many great comments and so much well deserved respect. I don’t know that I will ever get to the Medal of Honor Museum, but I do hope they will make a virtual tour available. Thanks for “schooling us” Tara !
There is a Medal of Honor Museum sponsored by The Congressional Medal of Honor Society located at Patriots Point on Charleston Harbor SC. Some years ago The Sons of The Confederacy wanted to put a Memorial To The South Carolina Ordinance of Succession at Patriots Point. I was enraged enough to write letters to the editor and others that can be summarized as follows: Oh Hell No! I cited the memory of my father-in-law’s fishing buddy Elliot Williams, aka Chief Boson’s Mate James E. Williams. Williams was influential in bringing the Museum to Patriots Point.
52 years ago Navy Seal Lieutenants Michael Thornton & Thomas Norris along with South Vietnamese seals put their lives on the line in North Vietnam for this nation . Lieutenant Thornton was awarded the MOH for his sacrifice on that day. If you have the chance please read up on what Lieutenant Thornton did on that day, it was an amazing feat. If you happen upon a Vietnam Veteran thank them for their sacrifice and buy them a beer.
Wow! Such a prestigious day! We need to be reminded of the bravery, courage and determination of those worthy of this MOH. The standards may have been changed, but the worthiness of the recipients has not. Thanks for your acknowledgement of this day any any of d the constant reminder of those who have earned it. Their actions should not be forgotten or overlooked by any of us. Thank you very, very much!

The valor shown to these recipients has been above and beyond the call of duty. Their stories need to be told so others can aspire to that greatness.
Thanks for an interesting history lesson! Thanks Tara!!!

The MOH Museum opened today I saw it on Fox and Friends this morning. It is amazing with history and interactive with MOH recipients.
