A U.S. Army Air Forces crew is rescued from the arctic ice. Their Boeing B-29 Superfortress, Kee Bird, had run out of fuel over Greenland and crash landed on a frozen lake just three days earlier.
Those magnificent men in their flying machines! Tales of valor and daring still excite my soul. We still see stories crop up from time to time about how they survived, possibly died, to make our world a safer place. Thanks, Tara, for your continued history lessons!
Surviving in the cold is always a situation stacked against you. In the Nuclear Cold War days I was often flying in the winter Alps, above glaciers, and mountains deep in snow and ice. Sounds silly but I had my favorite battery mittens and battery socks in my flight bag .. just in case adding hours of survival by countering extremity heat loss for awhile ... might help stack a situation in my favor. And yes, the aircraft's fuel and oils can be a critical heat source to survive until rescue.
The crew of the Kee Bird and the lone pilot who risked everything to rescue them were amazing men. Those early planes were something to behold. I’m intrigued by the museums dedicated to them. There’s some great museums we have visited. Great story, Tara.
Another new one for me Tara, and a fantastic story of daring and survival! I can't wait to read where the Kee Bird landed for the final time (the museum).

Great story
A true cold war story. 🥶
🇺🇲 Bravery, ingenuity and intelligence from both flight crews saved the day from tragedy.
And to the stellar work of the ground crew who tracked and pinpointed the downed crew...
Well Done 🥂
Scary for the crew. Lucky someone heard the radio message. Thanks Tara for this lesson.

I'm not certain, but this could have been the inspiration for the movie Island in the Sky.
