Those magnificent men in their flying machines! Tales of valor and daring still excite my soul. We still see stories crop up from time to time about how they survived, possibly died, to make our world a safer place. Thanks, Tara, for your continued history lessons!

Surviving in the cold is always a situation stacked against you. In the Nuclear Cold War days I was often flying in the winter Alps, above glaciers, and mountains deep in snow and ice. Sounds silly but I had my favorite battery mittens and battery socks in my flight bag .. just in case adding hours of survival by countering extremity heat loss for awhile ... might help stack a situation in my favor. And yes, the aircraft's fuel and oils can be a critical heat source to survive until rescue.
