I once met a Coasty who had operated landing craft at D-Day and he wept as he recalled the day. It is of no surprise that another would have stepped up to such a dangerous task and risk his life to save others. Indeed, it is the tradition of the Coast Guard to do that. Yet, it is the tradition of the American to risk it all to save another. Yet, when it comes down to that moment of decision, even the stout of heart will tremble but they will press on in spite of their fear. It is on the blood and backs of men such as Munro that this nation was built in freedom. May they all rest in peace. “No greater love has mortal man than for a friend to die.”

USCG 1'ST CLASS Douglas Munro was a hero by any one's standards. His selfless actions saved many lives while sacrificing his own life. True to hero standards, his final words were to inquire whether the Marines he was saving got to safety. The words of an American Hero.

Tara, I served as a Navy Corpsman among USCG Corpsmen and I can say that they are absolutely the equal to the Navy. God bless 1'st class Munro and all of the Greatest Generation and may God continue to bless all who have served or currently serve.

Thank you Tara for another MOH Monday.

Thank you for another informative post. People often forget about the Coast Guard.

Munro is among the bravest of our heroes. It’s good to hear about heroes from other branches of the military. We don’t have much knowledge about the Coast Guard, but they’re an important and vital part of the military forces. I hope every Marine rescued that day learned about the sacrifice of Douglas Munro that made it all possible.

The Coast Guard is under the radar . . . or sonar, as the case may be. This story I knew. And it is a great one.

I am surprised that Douglas Munro is the only Coast Guardsman to ever receive the Medal of Honor. Having spent many years living by the Pacific Ocean and sailing many years sailing, surfing and diving in it plus other locations around the Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, I have seen many Coast Guardsmen risk their lives to save others.

My Uncle was also in the CG serving during WWII in the Pacific transporting Marines onto and extracting them under fire. He told us many stories of times the crew men all prayed they could all get out alive. He said a lot of corpsmen that came out tending the wounded were the true heroes of the day.

God Bless them all.

Great Story,

Munro is certainly a true hero, his efforts and sacrifice allowed one of this Marine Corps group to continue fight the fight during WWII and go on to be one of the mostly effective and highly decorated Marines during WWII.

Thank you Tara
