What a beautiful post! Those ladies were exceptional for their service. The value of the encouragement and emotional support they rendered to those men is incalculable. The few accounts from some of the men who benefited from their presence are a testament to that. A little bit of normal in a chaotic and awful foreign war. This is another excellent post, Tara. It is new to me. Thanks to whoever suggested it.
Short skirts, “dollies,” the PC police would go nuts. It amazes and saddens me that something so pure and innocent probably couldn’t happen now. Maybe we could use that cross-dressing admiral instead…
I’m almost 74. This story brought tears because the lonely feelings of a G.I. are so real, no matter whether it’s Vietnam, Turkey, Thailand… we owned our duties, but the rec center relief reinforced hope that we could endure and home was still there waiting for us.
Donut Dollies. I hadn't heard of them before but I can imagine that they gave many men a much needed, if brief respite from the war. The smiles and glimpses of home had to be inspirational. Thank you ladies for having brightened the time away from home for many young men. Thank you Tara and God bless all who serve or have served this great nation.
In 1970 I volunteered to drive a group of USO ladies around for that very reason, it's amazing what smiles and warm hugs can do for morale. Thank you Tara for this special TDIH 💖
Great story, Tara. I had never heard of the DD before. Kind of amazing . . . young men could be drafted at age 18 and go to war. The Donut Dollies had to be 21 AND have their parent’s permission ! Times have changed !
How can it be I've never heard of these ladies before? Such an inspirational story would have been helpful to hear during those turbulent times of the war. Once again, thanks Tara for another fantastic post and God Bless.
What I needed to get over hump day this week. A loving story about people who cared and appreciated them caring. I know many men got a smile to make their day. Thanks Tara for this lesson. Warms my heart completely.

Jack, thank you for your service, wherever it was.
It's amazing how much we gain when we give of ourselves to others!

Jim, it sounds like you served in the military. If so, thank you for your service.

Those young women have all of my respect. Never got to meet them but heard a lot about them while serving there.

My thoughts exactly!
What an incredibly, moving story! I know a number of Vietnam vets. That would probably have a hard time finishing reading this with dry eyes.
Great read Tara
