I am awed by his heroism, for sure. What also strikes me is what became of his son, knowing the legacy of his brave father.
Men of color and ethnicity were often demeaned and mistreated, seldom recognized for achievements, expected to ‘go along.’ We owe an apology to those who came before who were abused and in spite of it served with honor. I’m sure that medal/reward was/is presented in heaven.
Tara, thank you for sharing the story of USCG 1'st class Mess Attendant, Charles W. David Jr.. Mr. David was an amazing man whose heroic efforts to save 90 men from freezing water following the torpedo attack and sinking of the USAT Dorchester resulted in his death from pneumonia.
His superhuman efforts saved many from a certain death in exchange for his own life. That is the definition of a hero and it was an often repeated scenario from the Greatest Generation during WW2. May God continue to bless Mr David and all who serve or have served this great nation.
Where would we be, but for men (and women) such as these? It’s especially noteworthy that Charles David didn’t allow the circumstances of his position stop him from giving his best. People like that are a credit to their race and a testament to their character. He did a lot for blacks by standing tall . We admire him today. Perhaps we could say Mr. David was an America First guy. His son must be very proud of him and see him as the hero he is.
Thank you sir for such bravery you exhibited that night. I can't imagine the strength of body and character it took to do what you did that horrible night to save others. May your wife and son drew great strength from your actions and were spared the indignities that so many of your color encountered. God bless you and your family.
Another member of the Greatest Generation that gave his all so that others may live. There were so many like Charles W. David, Jr. that I wish I had known. It’s unfortunate that they are all gone and soon my generation will pass also. Will history forget about the Heroes that created this Country and continued to fight to keep it free?
Tara Ross I thank you for all you do to not only tell us these events, but also to honor those that did so much so that we could live in freedom.

Where, indeed ?
Greater love hath no man than to give his life for another. Thank you, sir.

Reading this I believe that should have been a MoH.
Most uplifting
Tara- Thank you again for these true stories of admirable feats of courage
Charles David is most worthy to be remembered and honored
If not for the greatest generation, I fear we would be ruled by Marxism, Socialism or Communism. They saved our nation for future generations.
Thank you Tara for an awesome week of lessons.
Another awesome story, never heard , if not for you!

Thank you Charles David Jr. You are an inspiration to your fellow countrymen.
Courage is an amazing motivation!
I think he should have been awarded the Navy Cross for his actions. But that was a different time.
