I'll add a couple of medical related anecdotes. (1) After the Battle of Trenton Dr. Rush left the comfort of his Philadelphia home to treat the wounded from the Battle. A Hessian officer was surprised that an American doctor would treat him and his men. He gifted him his pistol to show his gratitude. As an officer, he was allowed to keep his weapon, without ammo of course. I have that pistol. My mother is a Rush. The pistol has been handed down with that story for +/- 8 generations. (2) Dr. Rush trained Lewis & Clark for their historic mission. Dr. Rush wanted to go along as the staff-physician but Pres. Jefferson would not allow it. Jefferson deemed Dr. Rush to be too old by that time. Thanks to Lewis & Clark's training, they lost only one man on their trip. An amazing feat for those times.

Thank you Tara for the post on my ancestor Dr Benjamin Rush. Your post was succinct and accurate. He was a great patriot and leader of those times. Medically he knew so little compared to today but his humanity and contributions to the cause were genuine. Proud to be a member the Rush family. A prolific writer and strong orator his lacacy has been preserved. Thank you again.

It’s been a 3 yr challenge from Ancestry, wiki Tree and FFamily Search and history books on the Rush Family. We have also traced us back to England and Capt old trooper John Rush who was Benjamin Rushs great grandfather who traveled on the ship called the Welcome with William Penn and settled in PA the old trooper was under the English General Cromwell when he left England for religious freedom. History is great.

I love your stories of our founding fathers and how you bring to light their part in those events. Rush had to be an exciting man to be around considering his deep belief in freedom and his love of peace. What that we all could example this.

Dr. Rush was a stand-up sort of an individual. I respect him for that.

Though he had a differing opinion on certain decisions that were made, his opinions and thoughts were highly valued to the extent that the influence of his signature on the Declaration of Independence obviously carried great weight.

I enjoy learning about our Founders. To have there wisdom to share with others may be the only saving grace we have.

Thanks Tara. What he said about a simple democracy or an unbalanced republic really rings true this day.

Yes. Awesome is the contribution of Dr. Benjamin Rush to our being as a nation and our form of government. Many such as Mr. Rush are largely unknown to the current Americans but you are making sure that your followers know and perhaps they won't be totally lost to the future generations. Thank you Tara.
