I'll add a couple of medical related anecdotes. (1) After the Battle of Trenton Dr. Rush left the comfort of his Philadelphia home to treat the wounded from the Battle. A Hessian officer was surprised that an American doctor would treat him and his men. He gifted him his pistol to show his gratitude. As an officer, he was allowed to keep his weapon, without ammo of course. I have that pistol. My mother is a Rush. The pistol has been handed down with that story for +/- 8 generations. (2) Dr. Rush trained Lewis & Clark for their historic mission. Dr. Rush wanted to go along as the staff-physician but Pres. Jefferson would not allow it. Jefferson deemed Dr. Rush to be too old by that time. Thanks to Lewis & Clark's training, they lost only one man on their trip. An amazing feat for those times.

Thank you Tara for the post on my ancestor Dr Benjamin Rush. Your post was succinct and accurate. He was a great patriot and leader of those times. Medically he knew so little compared to today but his humanity and contributions to the cause were genuine. Proud to be a member the Rush family. A prolific writer and strong orator his lacacy has been preserved. Thank you again.
