There are some countries where the American military intervention is still respected and appreciated. Obviously Guam is one. The Marines did their job and secured the island. No doubt the people were very happy and grateful to see them. How interesting that some of the Japanese were able to hide some of them for years. That would have been a big surprise when they were discovered.

The various Pacific islands were hard fought during WW II and we knew each one had its own history. We dare not forget the price of freedom, celebrate it at every turn. I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free...

The locals love being part of USA. Love the island. Thanks Tara.

I did some work on Guam. They love America! Many locals have stories (horror)about how their grandparents were treated during the occupation.

Thank you Tara. Your work needs to be read by every American. It is easy to forget the cost of freedom and not remembering makes us vulnerable to apathy.

The poor people of Guam and all of the other islands ruled by the evil Japanese during WW2 remember. The cost of not remembering is to repeat it.

God bless the American fighting men and women, all who serve or have served this great nation.

I was home ported in Guam with the Navy when the Last Japanese soldier was discovered. He was hiding out in an area where many shipmates went to swim and cool off in the waterfalls. We all marveled at how much back pay he must be due!

Thank you, Tara. Human history is so full of twist and turns and surprises. The note of the last surviving hiding solder is fascinating. I know there have been a couple of movies that note the hidden solders in historical context, but the mention that came to my mind was a Laurel and Hardy movie where they were the hidden solders. Now, my memory could be shaky, as I've not seen that movie since I was a teen, and that was umptiump years ago.

I worked on Guam for a short time and enjoyed being there and learning of their celebration of their liberation. The Chamoro (sp) people were interesting. I worked on the island nation of Granada and those people as well celebrated their liberation by US Marines from the Cuban/Soviet invaders.

I am curious about the underwater demolition crews who removed reefs and other barriers that would have impeded the attack. What a job. Thank you, Tara. It’s amazing to consider all that was involved in taking Guam and restoring freedom to the people. It’s also good to read of the appreciation the people of Guam still have for American freedom. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
