Stephen Decatur served on the court of inquiry into Barron—he’d also taken command of USS Chesapeake after Barron was relieved of duty. Perhaps you see why Barron wasn’t Decatur’s biggest fan?
Decatur was right to refuse Baron his return to rank. Maintaining military discipline and training is paramount and not only that being the concern but also concern for the men that would be serving under him but, the level of respect those men might have for their commanding officer. Baron's behavior was a prideful selfish desire with little concern for any of those considerations.
Thank you Tara for making "another day" the next day. That makes it easier for this old man to remember the story's more important facts. (Lol.)
It seems that the two Naval officers could have resolved their differences peacefully had Mr. Barron been more pragmatic and less resentful. He was actually treated more respectfully than I think he should have been, because of his dereliction in readiness, causing the harm to his crew and his ship.
Nevertheless, a good man died and in my opinion, a lesser man survived a needless duel. I hope that Mr. Barron eventually realized that he was in error and came to peace with himself.
Oops. Just realized that I put Leopold instead of Leopard in the first paragraph. My bad. I wasn't focused on that part and was just writing a quick transition from yesterday's story. #LateNightWriting It's fixed now!
Thank you, again, for another history lesson! Two brave men who fought for their Rights and the Rights of all Americans squared off against each other and both lost but one lost all!

A needless but apparently unavoidable loss. Life is such a short ride, best to use reason over emotion and petty hurts. Good story, Tara.✌️

Thank you. I agree with Wally Firkins. Dereliction of duty to that extreme should have carried a harsher penalty.

I didn’t notice an error? :)
