Washington often wrote of his belief that divine Providence intervened on behalf of Americans during the war. Was the heavy rain on October 31 one of these interventions?
The colonists were all full of gumption! This is why they were able to cross the Atlantic Ocean. This is why their descendants defeated the British. This is why each generation pushed further West on the frontier, and fought successfully to survive every inch of the way.
Washington had strong faith in a Divine creator and that faith guided him all along the way. Divine providence was indeed on the side of the Americans. I pray that it still is. It’s been said we want God on our side, but even more we want to be on God’s side. The Republic was made for a moral people. There’s reason to hope we are headed back that way. Thanks for another wonderful story about Washington, Tara, and the promise of the continuation of more of this part of our history.
I recently listened to an audio book version of Washington’s Immortals by Patrick K. O’Donnell which followed the Maryland troops who had played a vital role in this and many other battles. It is a worthy read for those interested in that period of American History. White Plains was one of those times that God had intervened in the affairs of men. For the Christian believer, God continues to intervene in the affairs of men beyond the point of having it all under his control.
Great story and without a doubt Divine Providence was with Washington and the rebels. This happened throughout the war, fog when needed, snow to muffle the sounds of movement and rain at the right time! Going against the great world power at that time, Americans needed Divine help to war the war and begin the Great American experiment! Can't wait for the rest of the story!
Yes, I believe that the hand of God allowed the delay in the Revolutionary War battle at White Plains in New York. The relentless rain caused a delay in the British advance to the point of their withdrawal from the field of battle.
There were numerous examples of the hand of God influencing outcomes during that war. I firmly believe that the American defeat of the British was preordained. The United States of America was established by God and it is up to us to keep it.
Excellent efforts from all concerned, esp. from Glover and his men who delayed a much larger force, refusing to meet them in the European standard battle practice of standing in the open and dying in droves.
