Whether America's founders or at least some were Deists can only be speculated. Only God knows the heart. What is certain is that they saw the importance of religion in the development of a society's strength, character and order among it's people. Freedom of religion is not just a freedom for the individual to worship, it allows for society to enjoy the freedom they have.

Amen. Thank you Tara. God certainly inspired and protected George Washington and I am sure that many of the citizens and warriors who fought for independence also believed that their new Nation was blessed by Providence.

The founders believed in freedom OF religion and freedom FROM religion. Many had come to America to escape the religions in their former homes that had forced them to flee. Let's live and let live—especially on the topic of religion.
