There seems to be no end to the many facets of George Washington. Like every person he was deeply influenced by and developed through his experiences. He was an intelligent man and learned quickly. Still nothing happens by chance. He was surely guided by his faith in God. I enjoy learning more about his life and how he became the very man who was instrumental in forming this nation.

This was certainly a hard time for anyone. It is amazing that Washington survived which is probably due to his physical conditioning from his work and healthy lifestyle. Hard physical work has its benefits. I suspect Washington’s character would not have allowed him to practice political nepotism nor is there evidence of him encouraging relatives to follow his political career. Washington leaves an example of a fallible man of character serving his country without wavering in his principles, character, or goals. How we need more of his ilk today in politics!

A great story of our future first President. Did not know of the sicknesses or the lasting effects. You can see how early endeavors and his own determination were not only crucial in his future, but also the Country.

While not a big believer in predetermination, the experiences that forged Washington's life and prepared him for becoming the Father of our country, leave me wondering if God does work in mysterious ways.

A strange bit of history that almost could have completely changed the course of history. If George Washington had not survived his illnesses the USA may have never come to be.

Lawrence passed away from TB. Likely that's where George W. contracted his TB?

Expand full comment

Yes, I think that's the thought. The analysis I read said he struggled with symptoms of TB for years afterwards and even began to worry that he'd die of TB as his brother had.

Thank you Tara. This story gives me much new insight into the life of our first president. I knew he traveled to Barbados and that he contracted smallpox, but I hadn't heard about his connection to the military. Perhaps Providence was providing George Washington with tools and inspiration for the future during this trip. Immunity from the smallpox epidemic and an introduction to the military.

Preparation for his future role as our Commander in Chief, no doubt.
