Indeed, where would our country be, had Washington declined to serve as our first president? I add, where is a person like Washington now, when we need him? Thank you Tara.
George Washington was an exemplary leader. When a man is heaped with such praise and adulation it is nearly impossible for him to be humble, but Washington was able to do it because he acknowledged he didn’t become the man he was on his own strength. The example and influence he left for others to follow is lacking in today’s politicians. If only the unselfish service of Washington was again seen in our government officials we would certainly be in a different position at home and worldwide.
I love the stories about Washington and his feelings toward public life. I agree with him in spirit that "there's no place like home." His devotion to the newly born country was evident and he led in the best way he knew how. We remain grateful for his life.
I find that the argument that our founding fathers were “deists” incredibly overlooks historical documents. Washington’s recognition of the hand of God working in favor of the American Revolutionary War is so obvious. Several other documents from other people attest to this. Deists do not believe that is possible. Also, the deist movement was not widely evidenced until after the founding of the United States. Washington’s Christianity is so obvious!
In no other place the divine intervention is so obvious than the aftermath of battle of Brooklyn. The fog on East river was so thick by some accounts that the American army escaped to Manhattan under the noses of British warships without a single boat being observed. If it was not for that fog there would be no United States.
Of course the secret ballots were not secret. The foundation which our country was built on is still in tact.
GW’s selfless sacrifice to answer the people and needs of newly formed country was a god send. Mr Washington’s openness and transparency is a trait not shared by all elected officials in today’s times.
I agree, where would we be had Mr. Washington not answered the call, humm. Brings to mind another question, where are we today?
“Yet again, Washington would give up the comforts of his much-loved home so he could answer a call to public duty.”
Today though, they love the trappings of the office, they love people serving them rather than them serving the people. They love the financial opportunities available and the power they can wield without any measure of humility. What a contrast!
Tara a great read about arguably the greatest American. Truly the father of our country. I am so ashamed of the way we as a nation are currently at and heading. As most of our founding fathers would be.
Washington had a divine calling throughout his life ignoring his heart’s wish. Grateful for this great man’s leadership. My wish was that Martha had kept his correspondence. A shame she did not.
Dear God, please send more Washington’s for America. We are in need!
The existence of the United States of America would be in doubt, if not impossible, without Gen. George Washington. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

He's always been my favorite, he set the tone for selfless service, we could use a rebirth of his selflessness.

Thank you for this story reminding us of how many sacrifices folks made to create this country.

He definitely believed that a personal God was intervening on the side of America. :)

Good Story

Perhaps our only truly great President.

Great details that help us catch the mood of the times, which is so often missing from our understanding of history.
Thank you Ms. Ross!
