Not much is known about this war. So the description of “The Forgotten War” is very appropriate. Thank you, Tara, for enlightening us. Seems like it was futile for the Americans in many ways yet they kept fighting. It had the effect of uniting the people and making the Union more secure. Small victories count!
I can certainly see where the U.S. HAD to stand up for herself and her newly gained independence in this war, even though there was not an overwhelming win. Whenever you make a great gain, an enemy will come to oppose it and challenge whether you're determined enough to continue fighting to maintain the ground you've taken. In this case, we were and we did! I was surprised to find that I had a 5x great grandfather who fought in this little remembered war as a Lt. Cavalry soldier. Our continued gratitude to ALL those who have given themselves and their sacred honor to maintain our freedom in this nation!
Yes, our nationalism was at stake and the war of 1812 helped to resolidify our country's feeling of togetherness. Besides, like you said, Tara, we got a great national anthem from it!
Thank you Tara. I never really understood why the war of 1812 was waged. I always assumed it was because the British were not reconciled to American independence. Your story today helps me understand the underlying rationale for the war.
That we had to fight for independence again was never something that I felt comfortable thinking.
I enjoy this post everyday. My fourth great grandfather John Neeley die Nov 14 1812 in the battle of Queenston. I also think about it when I read about the war. I enjoy history even before I knew about John Neeley read quite a bit about the war.
Thank you Tara. We have so much history that is not being taught these days. One of the points I noticed was the number of Reps compared to Senators in 1812. The Constitution provides for both and yet so many today still complain about the House having so many more members than the Senate.
Concise and well written story that makes it easy to understand our nation’s decision to go to war. Now, the comment about the permanency of the union . . . in these tumultuous times we can only hope that is the case. There are wars and aggression all over the world - on land, at sea, even in space. Certainly when I review the daily news we have our share of divisiveness here in the U.S. Here’s hoping that we can come together on the important issues challenging our nation and the future for our children and grandchildren.
Thanks for this lesson. I am aware of the highlights but now know more about causes. It was important to our sovereignty that we won. If not Britain would have kept trying to take us back into the kingdom.
The “small” victory in the forgotten war became huge for the United States of America and, IMHO, led directly to the Monroe Doctrine and fulfillment of Manifest Destiny and the U.S. rise to world power.🇺🇸✌️🇺🇸✌️
Perhaps the thing that most impresses me about the war of 1812 was that the United States did not lose. However, their games were minimal other than in national spirit. I do know I had the ancestors that did enlist and served , but I do not know if they participated in any battles.
This is an important war to me. England was intent on winning her American colonies back and was bullying them. I used “The War of 1812” DVD’s by the History Channel. I explained to my parents that the dvd’s taught the war better than I could, and I highly recommend them. The US was more cohesive after this war.

Sam Houston, David Crockett, Winfield Scott, and Andrew Jackson all got their start in this , what I like to call American Révolution Part II.

Great lesson! It also gave us a future President! A story for another time??

Thank you for posting these important and informative facts. Our younger generation is failing to learn.
It seems that this war was a preparation for many battles this young Nation would face in the future! Thank you Tara 😊 also great pictures!
