“Not only the most dangerous moment of the Cold War,” historian Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. concludes. “It was the most dangerous moment in human history.”
I had never heard this story until today. As a school age child, I assume much of the day's news went straight over my head as I played outdoors until the street lights came on. Then there was also the "protective" band of secrecy, keeping away so much news from the populace. What a close call we all had! God's hand was definitely in this, holding back the winds of strife.
Now I know where Tom Clancy got his idea for “ The Hunt for Red October !” Imagine if cooler heads didn’t prevail there might be no world today . Thank you for a story with a great outcome for all .
I've never heard this story before. It's also the first time I've heard of the nuclear torpedoes. Thankfully a cooler head prevailed. Interesting story, thanks Tara.
It’s hard to acknowledge the Russians of the Cold War as human, or caring…. Just the enemy. Krushev also deserves credit in helping peace w JFK. He lost his job over it…
Wow. I had not heard this account of how close we had come to full out Armageddon. The details of this Russian sub are so chilling. I thank God and the Russian approval process for saving the world. May we never see the use of nuclear weapons ever again. Thank you Tara.
There I was in October 1962, serving in the US Navy, with shipmates whose terms of serviçe were being extended just as they were expecting to be released. The good news was that in December I was able to nua Christmas gift for my girl friend and a few years later wife of nearly 60 years. As others have said, it was a series of fortunate events.
This is really a great story that did not come out until the USSR collapsed. I am so happy that cooler heads prevailed. The US Navy ASW was so good that they rarely lost track of a boat!
Oh, my! I never heard of this story before. I was a Sophomore in College and was expected to be in my next class on time. I couldn't wait for class to end so I could listen to the news for any report on whether we would be at war, or not. It was a very tense time and there were so many secrets! Thanks for sharing this great story, Tara.
The lesson here is there is safety in numbers. The decision making should never be left up to one person. Fortunately in this case a cooler head prevailed and prevented what would have resulted in horrific consequences. There is indeed safety in numbers.

WOW so close. I remember the blockade well at 12 years old, we were expecting war at any time.
Close call indeed. Another Devine Intervention!!! Thank you Tara 😊
Tara....another golden nugget of the deeper history you provide. Thanks for this one!
Thanks for sharing such an amazing time. Glad cooler heads prevailed!
