A sad but perhaps preventable end to the USS Scorpion. Submarine service is always a bit risky but when preventive maintenance is postponed, the risk factor soars.
I hope that the Navy paid hugely to the families of those sailors.
Thank you Tara and thank God for all who serve or have served this great nation.
You'd think anyone who survived this ought to be grateful, but history tells us this is why the folks returning home (when others don't) wind up with PTSD.
It's called survivor guilt. My first husband's dad got sent home from Africa during WWII for ulcers. He went home on a hospital ship with guys that had been wounded in battles. He had a bad case of survivor guilt from that.
A tragedy. Brave men lost to, maybe - lack of programmed maintenance. May their souls rest in peace. Thanks for keeping their memories alive, Tara Ross.
My father Captain E E Henifin was a career naval officer. He helped find the Thresher and knew men aboard the Thresher and Scorpion. He was a captain of the USS Pomfret at the time of the Scorpion being lost. My brothers and I recall when this happened. We waited with balloons for our fathers' ship to come into port in San Diego in 1969 and it safely arrived. We were devastated about the 2 subs that didn't return and heart broken for the families.
Thank you, Tara, for your dedication to preserving true American history, no matter how painful the stories may be. As a Cold War/Vietnam-era Navy veteran who served four years on Fast Attack Submarines, I honor my fallen brothers every Memorial Day, and on the anniversaries of the USS Scorpion and USS Thresher tragedies, with a moment of silence and a raised glass.
Thanks for this sad story, again the military and government has hid the truth. Why did this happen? You would think there would be a real inquiry not just a fast cover up. Maybe one day the truth will come out, either way somebody somewhere really screwed up. All the 99 are those who gave all in service to our country.
Oh my goodness! This is another tragic event in our history. Such heartbreak 💔 for the poor families who heard about the loss of their loved ones on the news. Sometimes our government does some very stupid things. Unfortunately those decisions may result in lost lives as it did for the men on Scorpion. We experienced that not so long ago. This is why transparency in our government is absolutely essential. Very sobering, Tara.
Thank you for remembering the officers and crew of the USS Scorpion. The general consensus is a malfunctioning battery . . . but of course there are other theories. NOTE: I have tomorrow (May 22) shown as the day the Scorpion sank and imploded, but I’ve been wrong before.
Wow. I've never heard of the USS Scorpion mystery. I can definitely picture the Russians destroying it and the US government covering that up to avoid a war. Still, it could have just malfunctioned, too. History has so many mysteries. And there are new ones happening every day. Great article, Tara.
Great historical articles. Keep them coming. Much appreciated. Thank you.

I'm so thankful for his service, but sure sorry for his suffering.

another reason to stay out of the water, I would rather not be in water over my head

‘Sailor, rest your oars… we have the watch.’

I remember the tragedy. Living in a Naval town, it was felt by most if not all. 🙏❤️💪🇺🇲

Those Who Go Down to the Sea in Ships
The men who go down to the sea in their ships,
Who sail on the water and pursue their trade,
The sound of the sea echoes back from their lips;
Their eyes see the wonders of what God has made.
I believe it was most likely May 23, but they may not know exactly when. Today's anniversary hook was the last contact on May 21. :)
Sad part of America 's history. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
The sorrows of bravery.
