So many firsts as technology spiraled! This was one of those celebrated during my lifetime. I was a week short of my 8th birthday and so interested in this sort of thing!
I was four and my parents relayed the news to us kids. I didn't realize the significance until a few years later when I could comprehend it all. Since we were in Alaska at the time, we were told many things about "Russsia" and why we had to keep gas in the car at all times, the sirens that would go off as training and the why we could see the convoys ascending the mountains to supply the missiles that were pointed in their direction. It was kind of scary to a 4 year old. Thanks for posting this Tara.
Captain Anderson wrote two books about that voyage, “Nautilus 90 North”, published in 1959, and the more expansive “The Ice Diaries”, published in 2008.
Another great article Tara. But I was surprised to read the regular references to our cold war adversaries "the Russians" - is it no longer PC to refer to the Soviets by the correct name? President Reagan referred to them as the Evil Empire - certainly not a bright spot in Russian history, but not entirely a "Russian" thing

I was 12 years old when the Nautilus crossed under the North Pole ice and I remember the elation of the mission.
This feat gave our country and our people a shot in the arm with respect to pride of accomplishment. It was a remarkable achievement.
Thank you Tara.
Now there is an accomplishment that I never learned, in all of my scholastic education. Thank you, Tara Ross for making this known, to us.

Perhaps she chose Russia because that is then name they go by now? *shrug*...
Amazing. And I never heard about this.
I remember reading of this as a 10 year old, standing in awe of such a monumental achievement for the U.S., for the U.S. Navy, and for all humanity.
This achievement always made me wonder if a submarine could go under North America! Am I opening a can of worms?
👍👍👍
Amazing lesson today. I learned a lot. I was 8 months old when this happened. Not something I remember from my history books.
🇺🇸⚓️🇺🇸
Thank you, Tara.
What a GREAT event in the history of the United States! I was 8 years old when this occurred but I do remember it well!
The Russians were winning until we showed its determination and talent!
And, the crew got to take a shower and wash their clothes!
Nuclear power worked back then and it will continue to work now!
Thank you, Tara, for another great history lesson!
As a child I do not remember this.
Thank you Tara for this post, now I am finally informed and aware!
