A well known story that bears repeating. The hubris of the owner, the insane lack of preparation for a very real disaster and everything else pushed toward the inevitable result.

The couples who stayed together on the boat impressed me most....

If you go down the West Side Highway in NYC the rusting remains of the cruise lines metal frame of the port Titanic was to dock at.

A great tragedy but the morals and values show their integrity. Women and children first! How would that play out today? Hard to think how the people would react in today's sad lack of morals and integrity. In a boat full of leftist they would argue "what is a women"? Just asking...Hat's off to all those brave men and women who gave their place on the life boats to others. The band that played on and those who comforted others..

A great tragedy caused, mostly, by negligence and carelessness. Thank you for reminding us, Tara Ross.

When I was a CNA in the 1990s I took care of a woman who was a child survivor of the Titanic she still remembered the screams and the bodies she saw a lot for a young child. May they all now rest in peace.

Safety third must have been the motto of the Titanic. On its maiden voyage this unproven luxury ship was obviously full of hype and false bravado. Unheeded warnings from another ship, inadequate observation watches after being warned of icebergs and, too much speed for the conditions put this huge ship into grave danger. The Titanic didn't have watertight compartments because the walls of the compartments didn't go to the top and when one compartment was compromised by the iceberg, it allowed water to flow over the top of the compartment and into the adjoining compartments.

Then, there weren't enough life boats for the number of passengers so, people were doomed when the iceberg was hit by the ship. It's actually somewhat amazing that so many people survived the sinking of the Titanic, some 123 years ago. Thank you Tara.

A sad epitaph, yet it caused a stiring in the minds of "safety officers" within all the passenger ship companies. If you ever take a cruise on the seas, you can't help but allow your mind to ponder the "fate of those passengers" that day, long ago. Pay attention to the Emergency Drills and the orders to disembarking in an emergency. It might mean your life.

This was a tragedy that could have easily been avoided. The arrogance of the officers commanding the boat at the time directed the radio operators to tell the Californian to shut up and continued to cruise at a speed that was too fast for the northern course they were cruising at and totally ignoring the ice warnings. According to the records the owners of the Titanic not only would make the trip to the USA in record setting time, but claimed the Titanic to be unsinkable.

The most amazing thing to me is that slowing down, or stopping overnight, was not standard practice when icebergs were present.

So many perished due to the incompetence of the crew, especially the radio operator.

We all can learn for this history lesson. Put others before self. Thanks Tara for the reminder.

A sad commentary of poor leadership and attention to detail from the ocean liners builder to its owner and crew.

One of the most well known ship tragedies is that of the Titanic. It’s one of the saddest and most told story. It is a warning tale of pride, arrogance, ignoring signs of danger until it’s too late and being insufficiently prepared. It is also a tale of unselfish love, devotion, courtesy and courage.

The Titanic story is a tragic tale of hubris and negligence. Few of the surviving people in charge came out of this smelling so good.
