This one deeply touched my heart! Captain Hudner did what most would not be willing to do even for a friend. In trying to save Jesse he did the unthinkable and crashed his own plane putting himself in terrible jeopardy. Doing this heroic act he thought he’d be courtmartialed. How fortunate the right thing was done and he was given a Medal of Honor instead. It would have been a great comfort to Jesse’s wife to know her husband had not been alone in his final moments and that his steadfast friend brought back such a special message.
Another great MOH story about how heroism takes place when Americans risk their own lives in an attempt to save their fellow man. The true American Spirit runs through their veins and they are all color blind, not caring about; race, color, creed or religion. It’s all about humanity!
Thank you Tara for another MOH Monday. Thomas Hudner was a hero for doing what he did in an attempt to save another Naval Aviator. Hudner was awarded the MOH for his actions although he feared a Courts Martial instead.
It appears that Mr. Hudner made the Navy a career as he retired as a Captain.
I must say, I am also a bit surprised that he didn't get the Courts Martial anyway because he willingly destroyed Navy property, particularly, an expensive airplane.
Anyway, thank you, Thomas Hudner for your attempt to save the life of a fellow Avistor. You sir are an American Hero.
Most of us read or heard of the Angels that were surrounding the brave soldiers of Yhe Korean War, but some angels crashed down In airplanes to save men. One has to wonder, if God dispatched more of His Angels to Korea or Vietnam?
Thanks Tara, for a very relevant history of our brave men.
I think they still make plenty of them today. Look at those that ran fearlessly into the twin towers on 9/11, the soldiers that serve every day, or the firefighters and policemen that risk their lives daily to serve and protect. It’s just too bad the the media cares more about movie stars and pro athletes than the true hero’s in our lives.
Thank you for sharing. Sometimes I don't have the time to read everything, but rest assured your e-mails are never trashed, and I keep every one of them. Thank you for your inspiring stories,
Capt. Hudner was not only a great friend but a very brave man - willing to suffer the consequences for a chance at saving his friend. Thank you, Tara, for sharing his story. A year ago, I saw the movie Devotion about the life of Jesse Brown so I knew this story but I still appreciate you for sharing it so that many could be aware. I am so glad Capt. Hudner did not get court martialed - however, I am sure based on his story that he didn't spend any time worrying about that happening as his only concern was saving his friend.
Many of these stories tell us on going beyond to save others. This one was very personal for them both. This quote says it all...“There has been no finer act of unselfish heroism in military history,” the captain of Tom’s aircraft carrier would say.
Captain Thomas Hudner had his priorities straight in the face of his own potential death or even the prospect of a tarnished career. His love for his Brother in Arms won out. Thank you sir!

What an admirable love for a friend! He more than deserved the MOH.
