Not all hero’s carry guns. Many of the medic and chaplain did so much in all the wars for freedoms we cherish.

Tara Ross What he and Desmond Doss did was still heroic, even without partaking in the violence.

Fr. Conway is a wonderful example of those that are even the least expected being able to endure so much physical hardship doing so, for others. Yet Fr. Conway kept doing for his shipmates to his last measure of strength. I surely hope that his memory isn't lost to obscurity.

Happy birthday in heaven, Father Thomas Conway. I find it amazing that Father Conway could do what he did during the terrible days adrift following the sinking of the Indianapolis. He undoubtedly was responsible for saving many lives during that time. It's remarkable that he didn't panic while he made his rounds, comforting his men.

I truly hope that the Navy has changed the requirement that a Senior Officer had to sign the recommendation for the Navy Cross when none survive. Thank you Tara for finishing this story of amazing bravery. I believe that Father Conway was held afloat until rescue time, by his lord and savior and then he was called home.

I look forward to these stories. The bravery of our sailors, marines and soldiers during war and peace is remarkable. Stories such as these should be taught in our schools so that our children understand the importance of defending our liberties and freedoms.

Conway exhibited true heroism as he put others ahead of himself. I wish he had lived long enough to see that those he served were rescued.

Unbelievable courage and care for others above himself. It cost Thomas Conway his life to lend comfort to his fellow sailors, but it’s obvious he thought it was worth it. He was a very special man.

Strength manifests in many ways, beyond physical prowess... The Lord was certainly being carried to the flock on Father Conway's shoulders at this juncture... May we all be blessed with just a hint of such strength in the face of adversity.

No sailor would have likely survived the sinking of the Indianapolis were it not for Father Conway. He provided the compassion to the remaining victims that they needed to survive. He provided outstanding, and very intensive work to gather them all together and also instilled in them the spirit to survive. He was so deserving to get the Navy Cross, howbeit much later. Sadly he did not live to be rescued.
