That was how the country was set up. Frankly, I think we would be a whole lot better off if we term limited all of DC and reduced their salaries to what ordinary Americans earn every year.

Of note here to me was the first woman mayor served one term as elected, and returned to normal life as she knew it before. And while she took flak, said flak didn't deter her from doing a good job.

Yes Tara, "God bless this great country of ours"! Mrs. Salter may have been the intended butt of a joke but the joke turned out to be ready to serve. Her election should have served to prove that, of course, women are the equal if not better than most men.

Maybe it did as eventually, women's suffrage came into full voice and the 19th amendment to the Constitution was ratified.

I agree that our legislators used to serve, fulfill their civic obligations and return to obscurity. Money, power and greed ruined our system of government. Thank you Tara.

Politics has become a career. The money and power is just too much for ambitious people to resist. Term limits, reduced salaries and restrictions on conflicts of interest and a basic knowledge of Civics and the Constitution should be required. Then we can see how many takers we have.

Makes me wonder if Mrs. Salter established any regulations regarding the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages while mayor of Argonia.

What an awesome story to get to read and learn about. Yes this country would be better if everyone started with what is best for all and how can I serve.

In total agreement that we were a better nation with public servants like Susanna Salter. Not looking for fame or fortune off of the people, but willing to do the job she was elected to do, do it well and then return to regular life. I wouldn’t say women are better than men...or vice versa. We complement each other. It was an important improvement for our country’s future when women were recognized for their special abilities. Somehow, if possible, we need to go back to the way things were done in the beginning. We need more people like Susanne, Metal of Honor recipients and patriots if we are to continue as a free nation. Not sure it’s possible, but there is always hope as more and more Americans become aware of the wrong turn our elected folks have taken and strive to stop it.
