The importance of the Electoral College to our Republic is often misunderstood or denigrated. Roger Sherman was one instrumental in making sure the elections were fair for the smaller states. When you understand the significance of how the US government works we understand how brilliant the founders were of this nation. Thank you for keeping our history alive, Tara.
I wish our schools would go back to teaching our history. I bet almost no one under the age of 35 knows about this man or his influence on our government.
Thank you Tara. Were not for men such as Roger Sherman, our Republican form of government would not exist and power would be greater in the largest states.
As you say Tara, Mr. Sherman, although not as well known as other founders was very important in the founding of this great nation. One principle, the electoral college may not have been created without the efforts of Roger Sherman.
The Electoral College is a brilliant idea. It requires Presidential candidates to work the States to earn the votes and prevents heavily populated States from forcing their political preferences on those that don’t share those preferences.
I am amazed at the Founding Fathers ability and willingness to seek solutions and compromises so the United States of America would happen. Obviously we see small and large States attempting to please themselves yet they came together to give us a wonderful country. Thank God. Appreciate you Tara in calling out attention to Roger Sherman.
Thanks for the history lesson, Tara ! I’m 69 and had never heard of Roger Sherman. We truly need more American history taught in our schools in every grade . . . and how our history folds into world history as well. Mr. Sherman was truly a wise man.
I hate the direct election of Senators. It actually dilutes the influence of the people since incumbency heavily weights the scales in favor of constant re-election. Theoretically, the state legislature should be more responsive to the people’s needs since the state representatives are closer to the people, and the Senators would then be at the mercy of the legislator and more responsive to state’s needs. I wish we’d go back…
I used to hate the direct election of Senators, even though I am not old enough to have experienced appointed and elected.🙃. But as I live longer, I realize that with direct election, citizens can respond quicker to a need for change than most legislative bodies will. The six year terms help to soften those changes on a national basis.
Tara, thank you for profiling another of my history "crushes". He deserves to be highlighted. Next. how about a write up on John Dickenson? Best to you.
The Electoral College is vital today. I wish more people took the time to understand it.

Thank you, Ms. Ross! As people undulate between popular vote and electoral college, this is a great lesson in why we have the electoral college.

Wholeheartedly agree.
Current K-12 curricula leaves our children vulnerable to false ideologies as they move to college or the workplace.

Great story I learned about another great patriot today! Keep these stories coming!!
It's always so good to get insight to these little known stories and people. Thanks, Tara!

I never knew. Thank you Tara for this wonderful story.
I had never heard of Roger Sherman - Grateful for your insight and sharing!!
Let’s get back to the appointment of Senators by state legislators and bust up the old boys’ school that is the US Senate…
Ms. Ross, would you consider the 17th amendment the antithesis of original intent of the Constitution's Article I?

Incumbency is practically a lifetime appointment. Legislatures turn over all the time…
Not in my state. 🥲Legislature are like lifetime appointments too.
I wish we could repeal the 16th and 17th, the way they did the 18th.

Great read Tara thank you for bringing Roger Sherman up as there is to little known about a lot of our founding fathers
