What an incredible story of strength, faith and love for families and Freedom!!! Their bravery is under estimated as they knew if they were caught it would be a torturous death for them. The yearning for freedom is deep within us all as it is a God given right!!! Can't wait for "the rest of the story"! Thanks Tara!!
What a fantastic story! Here is a man who yearned for freedom and took great risks to make it happen for his family and several other families. Men with great courage and determination don’t see themselves as victims, but change their circumstances through sheer will. The support of his wife must have fortified his plans. Look forward to more stories about this exceptional man.
I agree with Jennifer. This has all the makings of a great movie . . . action, intrigue, danger, love, and it’s all true. Better than a lot of stuff that Hollywood puts out today ! Thanks, Tara, another great true adventure !
South Carolina should put this freedom loving Civil War Era Hero and former SC Congressman in Statuary Hall. (The Painter was in the process of relocating some of Charleston Harbor’s defense cannons, so Smalls has 4 of the cannons on board when he escaped to freedom )
You just gotta love a story like this! What incredible daring and desperation! Freedom is worth risking it all! Thank you for sharing this wonderful story I had not heard!
I have a copy of the Official South Carolina public state history text book published in 1940. The New Simms History of South Carolina does not mention Robert Smalls.
They need to make his story into a movie!!
One could rightly say: He seized the day.

👏👏👏
What an amazing and unlikely story. Thank you Tara.
Robert Smalls was very brazen to steal the ship that he was enslaved to and deliver it to the Union forces.
I hadn't heard this story before but Mr. Smalls must have been quite the character, bold and determined to escape slavery for a life of freedom.

My sentiments exactly Patty.
This story almost seems unbelievable. What tremendous courage is shown by these acts of searching for freedom.
Great Story Tara!
Lovely inspiring story to start my day!

The determination and bravery of those seeking freedom!
But but but....He betrayed their trust! 😉
😁 Freedom is a strong motivator.
This could only happen in America.
