A great story of a true hero! I remembered watching the movie about his life and the seagull salvation that help save the crew! Thanks Tara for these great reminders of America heros!!!
Wow. What a wonderful story. Truly an American legend and hero. Thank you Tara for bringing this man to us. Remember them, say their names, tell their stories. You provide the service to your readers of: WE SHALL NEVER FORGET. When reading this, I was reminded of Louie Zamperini and his ordeal at sea. One item that was not I clouded in the life rafts was a means of providing shade. Thank you Tara.
Eddie Rickenbacker was a larger than life American Hero in nearly every definition of the term. His feats of flying and winning battles against enemy planes were truly heroic and his leadership in a time of life or death in a life raft, while very difficult, probably kept most of the crew alive. Plus, he lived to deliver an important secret message to General MacArthur. Rickenbacker fought in both World Wars so he must have been one of the longest serving aviators who also had been awarded the MOH in addition to many other awards. God bless Eddie Rickenbacker and God bless all who have served or currently serve this great nation. Thank you Tara for remembering this great American Hero.
Rickenbacker’s story is one of the more well known stories, but you always seem to add a new detail, Tara. After all he endured he actually delivered the message to General McArthur!
It is something I knew as a teen, but had forgotten about. I was a huge fan of Captain Eddie.
Prior to WWI he had worked as a tool and die maker at my great uncle’s shop on Livingston Ave., in Columbus, OH. My great uncle’ was Morris Stackhouse. I still have many of his tools, that are stenciled with his name on them.
The will to live, can be stimulated by many factors.
Rickenbacker's crew found [that will] in focusing on hate. Too bad they hope and resorted to that tactic. Yet, if that worked, so beit. American heroes, seem to be born every generation.
Hi, everyone — A few of you asked where I got the 27 kills….. This looks like my bad. I got the number from this Defense Department link (https://www.defense.gov/News/Feature-Stories/Story/Article/2902934/sports-heroes-who-served-indianapolis-500-race-car-driver-was-americas-top-ace/), but I honestly should have focused more. I mostly wanted to tell the story about him being lost at sea and was looking for an excuse to do it today. I was going too fast on that opening paragraph and trusted the Defense link too quickly. My bad!
I should add.... The correct number is 26. It is fixed now. :)
😊

Eddie Rickenbacker's twenty days adrift at sea is a new story to me. He was more than a flying ace. He was a skilled leader of men, too!

Mission accomplished although belated 👍
another reason I don't do water, just not interested in getting wet where it is deeper than I am tall
When Rickenbacker made a commitment, he fulfilled it.

Thank you, Tara.
I read a book about him and other early aviators by Winston Groom called, The Aviators. It's a great book and I highly recommend it!
🇺🇸 Major Rickenbacker was my dad's favorite (he was a radio guy in the Army Air Corp), but I don't remember him telling this story. Thank you, TR 🇺🇲
Thank you
