Rebecca Motte must have been quite exasperated by the seige of her property, to give permission to burn it down. Patriots like Ms. Motte played many roles in the quest for freedom and independence.

God bless our forefathers and foremothers for the sacrifice and insight that gave us this great nation. Thank you Tara and God bless you too.

Sacrifice for the sake of liberty. As you often state, Tara: “How truly American!” As ever, thank you for bringing these lesser known acts of patriotism to light.

What a woman indeed! All patriots, men and women, contributed to each victory that eventually led to total victory. Rebecca Motte is a great example of one who loved and believed in the cause and was willing to sacrifice for it. Action behind words! Repeats are welcome, Tara.

Success on the road to victory. I know the success in SC provided a positive emotion to troops and victory at Yorktown.

Wow! Now THAT is a patriot! So many of our nation's earliest patriots were so selfless in their sacrifice and bravery. Throughout our Republic's history Americans have stood up whenever the call for strength and unity was made. All of those selfish brats and radical anti American protesters and unscrupulous politicians are giving previous generations the middle finger as they trash our monuments and show the world just how weak we have become. What a shame!

I live about 15 miles from the site, as the crow flies. But to visit, you have to drive around the forest, about 45 miles. So much history around me that I, as a SC transplant, never knew about. I need to do a road trip. Thanks for sharing with us, Tara!

Good grief, that's not a forest, it's the river. :D

I love this story! Being a resident in the “low country”, it brings our local history to life! Francis Marion Forest is local. It enhances my imagination..

I seem to remember this story. I read a book about the Swamp Fox when I was a teenager and believe this was included. Thanks for sharing!

Very good read Tara about a very little known act of patriotism.

Another bit of history that is a perfect example of what true patriotism is all about and we seem to have lost in our country today. Perhaps if we had the need to fight on the home front again, we would rise to see that patriotism again? I wonder?
