On this day in 1967, Ronald Reagan is publicly sworn in as Governor of California. A smaller ceremony had already occurred a few days earlier.
"Freedom is a fragile thing and is never more than one generation away from extinction," Reagan famously said. "It is not ours by inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people. Those who have known freedom and then lost it have never known it again."
Regular stories resume on Monday, but I thought everyone might appreciate this quote today.
The "fragile" part is the most quoted, but read the rest and tell me if it isn't more important...
"It is not ours by inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people. Those who have known freedom and then lost it have never known it again."
It would be wonderful if the generations today truly understood that quote.
