Wow! What terrible treachery by Wilkinson! It’s not a new story. Probably the most infamous and well known traitor was Benedict Arnold. There have probably been some who were never discovered. It would be interesting to know if he actually poisoned General Wayne. Doesn’t seem like either man’s jealousy or anger worked in their favor. Can’t really blame Wayne for following up on Wilkinson’s treachery. Never heard of either man until today. Thanks, Tara.

Even in a young America Traitors were everywhere . Washington had to deal with them as did Gen Wayne . I never knew of this story of the treachery and cowardice that Gen Wayne had to face. Sadly as today the one responsible Wilkinson got away with it ! Sound. Familiar in the modern era of America . Thank you for the story

Wilkinson was a terrible person. He had so much promise in the American Revolution, but something went wrong. I think he was a conniving, power-hungry narcissist who would willingly sell out his country and anyone who tried to stop him for the power and/or money. For too long he's flown under the radar.

Thank you for this bit of history, Tara. As a native Hoosier,I first learned of General Wayne in middle school, in our required class on Indiana History. His exploits in Indiana with the native Indian tribes were looked upon with pride. And the general location of his garrison, at the confluence of three rivers in northeastern Indiana is today the 2nd lmost populous city in our state, known as Fort Wayne, named for Mad Anthony!

Tara

Great story I never knew about - once again

Thank you

Hopefully there is karma after all for Wilkinson & his likes today

Mad in “Mad Anthony” then meant angry - not insane - although such treachery could drive you insane!

There will always be those power hungry men and women. Nothing should surprise us. Men and women of influence abusing their power.

Wilkinson was also accused of working with Aaron Burr in trying to start their own nation out of Spanish territories.

Unfortunately these things are all to often and carry on in modern times. Sad reality isn't it! Thank you Tara 😊 enjoy your weekend.

Stories of that western region ring strong in my heart as I was born in SW Ohio. These are the times that made those areas such a rich place to be raised, to learn the local history. A great history can be found in Allan Eckert's tome The Frontiersmen. It talks of the struggles between the Indian tribes there and the settlers that came to make it home. Well worth a read.
