The United States had been fairly safe from enemy attack for most of its existence because of the distance from most probable enemies, up to this point. But, while slow to wake up, wake up is exactly what happened. The sleeping giant, finally awake, became the fighting and unified giant. The whole country responded with a vengeance and when the United States joined the war, it did so with a single goal in mind. Victory at all costs.

Thank God for the Greatest Generation whose efforts saved the world from tyrants in Europe and Japan. God bless the United States of America and all who have served or currently serve this great nation. Thank you Tara.

The lack of preparedness and the damage to Us shipping are not well know facts. It is hard to admit to being forewarned, and then to ignore that warning. Thank you for this bit of history, Tara Ross!

Admiral King, General Marshall and FDR were very slow in recognizing the deadly threat to our merchant fleet along the coast. 🧭🚢🌊⚓ Lots of Mariners paid the price, ⚙️🛢️not only in treasure, but with blood 🔥🩸🛟 in the waters that should have been safe. 🇺🇲😔🌃 The price of the learning curve is steep in war. 💥🪦🔔

It’s unimaginable that after clear warnings were given the US leaders ignored them. The cost for that was great. The loss of life being the greatest price. As is typical of our country we came out strong and were victorious. It’s important to always be vigilant. Good Friday post, Tara.

My father answered FDR’s call for all Merchant Mariners to report to the neatest Seaman’s command in the fall of 1941.

He was ordered to Ft Trumbull Merchant Marine Academy at New London CT & upon graduation was assigned to a Liberty Ship.

His first cruise was part of a large convoy heading to Murmansk Russia.

He served as an officer on several different Libertys during the course of the war, landing at Omaha Beach on June 9, 1944 & then on to Genoa Italy.

He shared many great sea stories with our family ♥️.

My hero 🎆🇺🇸🎆🇺🇸🎆🇺🇸.

I have my suspicions that some of the foot-dragging at the time was intentional to change public opinion about getting involved in the war. They could have implemented blackouts for port cities immediately. Just my cynical opinion.

I couldn’t help but question the apparent attitude of the Pentagon , then, under FDR, and under Biden. Was FDR in a similar mind? War in Europe had been going on for several years by then, and unease between the USA and Japan had been building as well. Is ignorance really bliss? If so, for whom? Red or blue, we owe a lot to Pete Hegseth and his boss. No? Are you a combat arms veteran who faced adversity?

I agree entirely. I want a military focused on fighting and winning a war, not gender identity nonsense. DEI is discriminatory and removes merit based selection from our leadership, which weakens our readiness. It is difficult to not address political parties in these forums because so many issues are directly influenced. Social programs, our border security, drugs, and certainly the state of our military. We The People said enough, and now we can move forward, but the obstructionist Congressional members and these activist judges are sickening. I find it difficult to understand how anyone could support this political party who is tearing at the very fabric of America by ignoring the results of our election which placed President Trump in office.

Incredible that America was so Unprepared not only on the East Coast but in the Pacific as well.

Now we have depleted so much of our preparedness by losing so much military equipment in Afghanistan and providing the rest to Ukraine without any accountability we are once again ripe for the picking. it is truly sad what the Biden Administration to our military.

God Bless the USA and please watch over us.

I have never been an "alarmist," yet, as the Boy Scout moto goes, "Be Prepared"!

I appreciate your history (lessons), Tara.

I hope that our President, and his Joint Chiefs of Staff ( in the Pentagon), and Congress, pick up a copy of today's message to America.

"Never allow a sad lesson in readiness, go unlearned in the future of America."
