This signer—Oliver Wolcott—didn’t vote for the Declaration, but he signed anyway. What happened to his vote? Remember, his signature made him a traitor in the eyes of the King.
Thank you for this enlightening piece. I never heard of Oliver Wolcott. He was serving quietly in the background. Why is it that many true heroes do not seek the limelight? It just seems to be a character trait. One to be admired.
There are many who are influencers who do not realize that they are influencing. They just want to contribute. They simply and consistently do the work that promotes good. Could be a mother or father, aunt, uncle or friend, a mayor, a governor or high profile leader. They are principled but not perfect.
I appreciate men of integrity such a this historical figure, Oliver Wolcott, who serve their community and country by intertwining that service with their life's work. It is a shame that politics and political power is so tempting to some that they become corrupt in its administration. It would seem that we are rife with many of those who succumb to the temptation. Thankfully a few Wolcotts still exist!
As an unapologetic gun nut, and having done some bullet casting Myself, I loved the idea of turning the King's statue into freedom seeds! LIBERTY from the mouths of muskets! Once again Tara, THANK YOU!
Oliver Wolcott deserved to sign the Declaration of Independence although he wasn't present to vote for it because he fighting for it. Mr. Wolcott gave his working career to his country and we should not forget him or his contributions to the Nation. Thank you Tara.
Betsy Tara Ross I was at a wedding several years ago where the only person in attendance who didn't actually witness the ceremony (he was minutes late!) signed as the WITNESS! So I guess this works too. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
