I remember I was in boot camp for the USMC on that day. Coming into the mess hall for dinner we all noticed that a TV was there and the news was all about this “Special Event”. Not having heard any outside news for weeks, it was indeed a “Special Event.”
I was working in a glass bottle factory which had TV’s at the beginning of each line giving workers info on the timing of the next step in the operation of the machinery. The Plant manager redirected the TV’s to show that first step by (a) man on the moon!
I was shocked that the management would do that but very happy that he did it!
That you, Tara, for this great story of determination and achievement done by our nation!
I remember this like it was yesterday. Memories like this seem innocent and inspiring. I wish that we had the same collective positive energy as a nation today. Thank you Tara. Yes, JFK would have been proud.
The story goes that Aldren told Armstrong that he had no balls if when he stepped onto the moon he did not yell “Oh my God! What is that!”, then scream ant cut his mic. Remember these were hotshot test pilots who spent their lives defying death. Pranks were in their DNA.
It was an exciting time to have lived as a child. I was 13 and was at my grandmother’s home. She would not miss the coverage! Imagine how she felt having seen so much advance in her lifetime having been born in 1900!
I remember that day and the awe it inspired, not to mention the resultant change in science fiction stories. ;) We have had setbacks and advances, but none more exciting than the realization that this increase in knowledge before Christ's return was prophesied. Looking toward that day.
It was a thrilling moment for me as a little girl watching it happen on a small black and white tv. I have never forgotten Neil Armstrong’s memorable quotes. “One small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.” And “We came in peace for all mankind.” Yes, Kennedy would have been very proud. I remember the call between the two astronauts and Nixon, but had forgotten Nixon’s words. It certainly brought the heavens closer to us.

I remember this, as it was broadcast across all of the television networks. It was quite the source of excitement.

Apollo was so much fun to watch and learn from.

“[a] man”? Why was it necessary to include the article, when that is not what he said?
