The “Mercury Seven” were an elite group, selected only after an arduous application process. Applicant Pete Conrad would later say that he felt like a “lab rat.”
I guess we didn't know what we didn't know. We had to guess what real space would do to a human and the testing attempted to assess all possibilities, but wow!
I remember the Mercury 7 and I, along with the rest of America followed each attempt to successfully reach space and each subsequent flight. We followed each flight of each program with pride. Thank you Tara and thank you to each person in our space programs history.
We celebrated these men and romanticized their selection and wanted to aspire to their accomplishment. Little did we know. Or if we did know we might have celebrated them even more. Our space program was second to none thanks to all of the men and women who were preparing these brave men for the unknown.
