Lord, guard and guide the men who fly Through the great spaces in the sky, Be with them always in the air, In darkening storms or sunlight fair. O, Hear us when we lift our prayer, For those in peril in the air.

Man's need to go farther, faster, higher, lower, more, more more is what exploration does to us. How many are the tales of those who don't return-from Magellan to the crew of the Columbia! Is it worth it? Yes, but the price is dear. We mourn the losses and shout for the gains, but we continue to push forward. Thanks for the reminder, Tara.

There is no way to know the unknown. These men are heroes for going into the unknown, especially if they do not return!

What a fitting tribute to her father written so many years later when the time of mourning has past. How much she must have thought of her father over the years, sorrowful for his loss yet celebrating his spirit of courage and bravery.

Yes, I agree. She was only 2 years old when he died, so that had to have been extra hard.

Hard to take in how a man would be willing to risk his life in this manner. He was very brave. I cannot imagine the sorrow his daughter felt. Her message to her dad was compassionate and loving. So hard for his family to face. In spite of the sadness they must have been very proud of him. He was an extraordinary man. Still it’s a very heartbreaking story.

"You were young and brave and optimistic. How could I stay angry with you? I forgive you for dying," the words of the daughter of Captain Milburn Apt choked me up.

Captain Apt and all of the brave people who challenge the boundaries, deserve our respect and gratitude. Without their efforts, we would not have much that has been achieved.

I have great respect for Captain Apt who gave his life for his mission, not unlike any others who have served and given their lives for our freedom and our way of life. Thank you Tara.

These are history lessons at their best. As much of an aviation nerd as I've always been, I had not heard any details of this first Mach 3 flight, nor of the tragic loss of its pilot.

In typical Tara Ross fashion, though, we are given the clear snapshot of the facts of what happened and why, but we also have the beautiful emotions of the impact on his two daughters from this historical and tragic event.

I think that's gotta be one of the best ways ever to make history lessons stick!

I sound like a broken record, but Thank You, again, Tara!

There are quite a few that I don't know, Tara.

But even for all the ones I do know about, you have an uncanny gift to find the poignant details to include that brings the prople to life in them! The people involved and how they influenced or reacted to the event really is what makes them all milestone markers in history wirth remembering, I think.

You had me crying with this last Mach 3 lesson, Tara.
