Thank you Tara. As discussed yesterday, Divine Providence may well have been at hand during the British invasion of New York.

George Washington's army was cornered but it miraculously escaped. Thank you Tara.

What a terrible predicament! As bad as it looked there was going to be a huge change for the Americans in the days ahead. Yes, Divine Providence would intervene again. Washington, after all, was a man prone to miscalculations too. It was not an easy task creating a free and prosperous nation. Without the help of God and the persistent determination of wise people who knows what this country would have become.

Your story proves the point that precise intelligence is a necessity during warfare. Had Washington known the truth of the strength of the British and Hessian forces General Washington would have made entirely different decisions that could have changed the outcome of the war.

Good intelligence is indeed a vital part of successful prosecution of war.

I have been reading “Almost a Miracle”. About 2/3rds through it.

Indeed, it was the hand of God that secured an American Victory. And after long years of depredation, slaughter, illness, and so many crushing defeats, the French Navy and allegiance contributed greatly as well.

Washington himself gave God the credit after the war.

The AWI has been romanticized, many myths promoted over the years. In the end it was a winner take all, fight for survival. Had America lost many would have been executed for treason or imprisoned. As it is too many that survived were financially ruined from the prolonged War.

Looking back, it amazes me the Colonists had the audacity to take on the most powerful military in the world, with any hope of winning.

It is no surprise that there were so many Tories. The odds were against an American Independence from the very beginning. Liberty or Death was a harsh reality once the Declaration of Independence was made.

I have Patriot Ancestors who served in the militia. 6 of them, 5 survived to tell of it. They were indentured servants from Germany. Had only immigrated in mid 1700’s from Germany.

They were farmers and gunsmiths who settled in Virginia, and later PA.

Always enjoy your history lessons Tara! God speed!

400 ships including 73 warships! 20,000 soldiers.

We can't even imagine what Washington, his troops, and all the leadership must have been thinking. They were committing treason by engaging in this conflict. Most likely they would have been executed if and when they lost. There had to be so many thinking they were crazy because there's no way this ragtag group of rebels could possibly defeat the strongest army in the world. It just wasn't possible.

But they did.

Again and again I read how our troops were in disarray in battle after battle. Yet we managed to prevail. Divine providence and Washington's, and others, will power made that happen. I like David McCullough books. But I like Tara's Reader's Digests even better?
