I'm not sure if I have heard of this story before Tara but, I'm sure that I haven't heard anything of the details. I would say that Providence may have been working to foil this ransom attempt. I would guess that the Secret Service was revamped following the attempt to steal Lincolns body. Thank you Tara for another piece of our nation's history.

The accounts of our history are fascinating, Tara! So many I have never heard. This is one of them. Except for the undercover agent the story might have been much different. Interesting how the Secret Service evolved into protecting the president. Some attempted and successful assassinations have left questions which may never be answered, but overall they have managed to keep the presidents safe. Another excellent post.

Seeing the train reminds me Theodore Roosevelt witnessed the funeral train as a little boy. I'm also reminded of the bad luck Robert Lincoln had.

Criminals concoct the most cockamamie ideas! It's wonderful that the Secret Service was finally in full bloom by that point.

A beautiful cemetery it is. Enjoyed the peaceful and respected way President Lincoln's final resting place is maintained. Glad these thieves were prevented from their task. I look forward to hearing the rest of the story on the Secret Service. Thanks Tara.

Before Lincoln’s body was permanently buried, the coffin was open. Lincoln’s face was covered with white makeup after it had turned black in Buffalo. While Lincoln hated gloves, he had been buried in a pair.

I knew of the story but couldn't remember the details. Thanks for the refresher, Tara.

I think there is at least one other president with body issues, maybe good for another TDIH or trivia.
