Sgt. Leroy Mendonca was a true American Hero and, after running out of ammunition and grenades, he fought hand to hand and to his own death, in order to protect his platoon. An action that would earn him the MOH.
This handsome young man died fighting after being severly frightened as a nine year old during the attack on Pearl Harbor, by the Japanese. It does make me wonder if there was a mental connection between him as a terribly frightened child and the action in Korea, that caused him to fight so gallantly.
The sons this nation has produced to work in her defense speaks so well of the culture of freedom, self-determination, and concern for others totally amaze me. May the valiant action of Sgt. Leroy Mendonca, US Army, never be forgotten. His determination for his men to survive is unmatchable by all but a few of his caliber. May he rest in peace.
It kinda sounds like he stayed and fought to the death while his platoon retreated. Obviously he fought an incredible fight to the end. Amazing someone so young had the courage to see this through. No doubt he remains strong.
Sgt. Mendonca had little thought of medals for Valor, I am certain. His only thoughts were of the safety of the men in his platoon. That he was awarded the MOH was the least that could be done to honor his selfless actions for others. May he be remembered.
So young. So brave. This account shows how important strong families are in raising valiant men and women. It’s good that you shared the kind of family Sergeant Leroy Mendonca was surrounded by. Part of our decline as a country has been the decline of our family values. Mendonca is a hero and came from the great state of Hawaii! His family has every right to be proud of him.
If all of our citizens fought for this nation like these who went above and beyond; oh what an awesome place we could live. Thanks for this lesson Tara. I am grateful.
What a hero this young man was! Ordered to withdraw he stayed to fight for the lives of his fellow soldiers! He ran out of ammo and fought with grenades until he ran out of grenades!
Thank you, Tara, for another fine story of another hero!
Another great story of heroism beyond what normal people are capable of being able to do! WOW!

Please keep these memories coming, our children and grandchildren need to read these!
So so brave.
I agree with Johnny Baker Jr. Another great story of a great man who sacrificed himself so others would be safe.
