Going above and beyond. Just doing what needed to be done. Selfless service with his fellow soldiers’s welfare upper most in his mind. Another great example of a true American hero. Happy Monday, Tara!
As a native Alabamian, I knew Mr. Mize was a MOH winner. But never really knew the circumstances. As an Alabamian he makes you proud of the state when there was so much to hang your head about
Another humble hero! I believe they just saw a job that needed to be done and did it, regardless of the danger to themselves. God above surely protected them for another day and another need.
Growing up in Alabama we had a unit in our Alabama history in 4th grade on the Medal of Honor recipients from our state. I remember Mr Mize’s story vividly because my dad, a Korean War combat vet, talked to me about it when we studied it. Sadly, I don’t think this is taught now.
Another excellent history lesson....we fans would probably never hear of these heroes and their exploits except though your column....Keep up your extraordinary research of these individuals /groups...I always finish your columns with amazement in my mind...
Appears Sgt Mize had a keen sense of observation. Those bushes weren’t supposed to be there so he decided to do a little gardening. Thank you Sgt Mize!
I think these men are always scared, but they have the courage to overcome their fear to achieve this great goal!

Quite the hero and the President, a former Army General, placed the Medal around his neck.

A theme is these lessons is "I was just doing my job". They did so much more. God bless the men and women who serve and "just doing the job".
