Yes, it seems a common thread among MOH Awardees. The recipient is wearing the Medal for the others and his own actions were only singled out to wear the Medal. Sgt. Calugas wore his Medal proudly and deservedly.
Men like Mr. Jose Calugas are the true American Heros. Thank you Tara.
This time frame in the Philippines saw the last mounted cavalry charge of the US Army! The US 26th Cavalry charged a Japanese encampment, not with sabers but with 1911 Colt semi-automatic pistols! The unit then retreated into the mountains alone with many of the Philippine Scouts. Their story is pretty impressive but hard to read...
I have toured Bataan and Corrigador both. Truly, hallowed ground. Corrigador has a beautiful memorial that pays tribute to the entire Battle of the Pacific, starting with Pearl Harbor and ending with the Japanese surrender. One gun barrel at an emplacement has shell fragment pock marks in the steel and the bomb crater still sits exposed. You know every man died at that moment. President Ferdinand Marcos built a 300 ft. tall cross at the tip of Bataan looking out over Manila Bay and a museum describing the Battle of Bataan. They have markers to show the route of the Death March every kilometer. I visited in April and the heat and humidity was brutal, so the suffering of those prisoners is beyond comprehension. Everyone should watch the movie The Great Raid about a POW camp in the Philippines. True Story. Excellent post Tara, as always. Thank you for sharing.
There’s definitely no set description of a hero except the apt description: “Bravery, selflessness—and humility.” These are common traits among our heroes. This account shows that no matter who we are or what our background it’s possible to do heroic things. Jose Calugas was more American than some “home grown” Americans. Quite a story! What a great hero!
I have read a lot about the war in the Philippines but had not read about Jose Calugas before. Thanks for this previously unknown, to me, bit of information.

Thank you, Tara!
Betsy Tara Ross my dad knew one of the survivors of the Bataan Death March. He said he did not like camping.
