Chapman may not have been trying to help the apple industry, but he did so by accident. Because of him, we have apples in American varieties, such as the Golden Delicious.
Thank you Tara for fleshing out the story of John Chapman (Johnny Appleseed). Of course, we learned the tale of Johnny Appleseed as kids but you provided details that I certainly never knew.
This version of Johnny Appleseed sounds more like an early Howard Hughes than the jolly tree planter I thought he was.
Love the description "Chapman had the eye of a speculator, the heart of a philanthropist, the courage of a frontiersman, and the wandering instincts of a Bedouin nomad."
Seems that shrewdness, generosity and eccentricity combined to make John Chapman a loved personality, Well known for producing apples and settlers in the new frontier. This was a great story.

Great story.
I grew up in an area of PA where Johnny Appleseed had traveled. One of the first stories of history my dad told me when I was very young. 🇺🇸❤️

Thank you, Tara! Your post reminded me of an article I wrote about Johnny Appleseed for a children’s educational magazine years ago...I posted it as a blog post thought I’d share it 😊🍎 https://dianaerbio.wordpress.com/2016/09/26/johnny-appleseed-planted-seeds-for-a-better-future/
