It seems that the assassinated President’s are steeped in mystery. Both Lincoln & Kennedy had serious and plausible theories of who was really behind the killings of both. But as you said, we may never really know since both shooters were killed before they were ever given the chance to talk.

As always, conspiracy theories abound, even in those days. As you said, we'll never know.

Thank you. A fair account of this event. Been to Fords theater. Lots of history including the President’s death bed across the street.

The last part of the story, the speculation, is new to me. Conspiracy theories seem always to abound when there is a cloud of secrecy and emotion.

I have been catching glimses of people whose current opinion of our 14th President is not stellar. I choose to believe that President Lincoln was a wise and fair man who desperately wanted the Union to survive. Thank you Tara.

Not much has changed in human nature from then to today with regard to conspiracy theories except that today the conspiracies seem to be more truth than theory and have been renamed disinformation.

Booth and his family were the best known and recognized actors in the United States. At Mudd’s trail he claim he didn’t recognize Booth when he set Booth's leg. However, a few months prior Booth had met Mudd and stay a weekend at Mudd’s home. Later testimony reported Mudd and Booth had met in Washington DC.

Pick someone like Tom Cruise

Robert Downey Jr., or Dwayne Johnson and have them spend a weekend as a houseguest. Think you wouldn’t recognize the a few months later?

History often leaves a multitude of unanswered questions. Certainly some of the details about Booth may be true. There were plenty of witnesses and he gave his real name. Criminals usually love to brag about their evil deeds so he most likely shared with a number of people who could later recount what he told them. The sad part is that Lincoln was assassinated and the nation lost a great president. He wasn’t flawless…no human being can claim to be, but he was an honest man who trusted in the leading of God. He did his best under difficult circumstances.

The soldier who executed Booth was Sergeant Boston Corbett, who had castrated himself using a pair of sharp scissors. Corbett was reluctant to seek treatment, but wanted to dispel his lusts for his religious fantacism.

The officer in charge had ordered his men not to shoot. After Booth was brought out the officer went down the line asked if they has shot booth. Corbett claimed he had. However, he, like the others, was only armed with carbine. Secretary of War Stratton ordered that a pistol be issued to Corbett to replace the one he “lost.

The speculation will continue. Believe Booth died from a gunshot received in Garrett's barn.
