Tyler was elected as Vice-President and was the first to take the Presidency upon the death of the President!

Thank you Tara!!

I think we need to vote on the Vice President separately from the President. This would mean the BEST person would be chosen by the people and not the Party.

Thank you Tara. The cabinet of President Harrison was in for a rude awakening when newly sworn President Tyler refused their attempt to undermine the power of the Presidency.

However, not much has changed regarding the selection of Vice President in my opinion.

President Tyler's presidency was almost a footnote, yet it did provide for the annexation of Texas. And that the succession of Presidential service at the time that the Constitution had been written, while clear at the time it was written and approved, was still a matter that needed more consideration.

Enjoyed learning more about President Tyler. Love that he annexed the great state of Texas! He sure had a lot of opposition, but he faced it head on and did the best job he could since he was given the opportunity. He obviously was not just going to follow what Harrison’s administration was doing. He was a thinking man. Thanks for highlighting this president.

This strikes me as the first example of a political party nominating someone for VP with the hope that they will never become President. That hope was shot down why Tyler became President. Have the political parties changed much from the 1700s to today? I think not.

Yes, maybe.... Then Teddy Roosevelt was selected for VP with the same purpose. History is so interesting, isn't it?! ;)

We can somehow thank the Lord, that our Country has survived ...through some really pretty bad Presidents, or Presidential situations. A fairly recent example, is the country functioning quite well through a Presidential 2nd term of Alzheimers and the Country running on the wife's Astrology. Then, of course, a President that was never elected to either Vice President or President. Just two examples.
