His citation describes Canley “repeatedly rush[ing] across fire-swept terrain to carry his wounded Marines to safety.” “They’re alive, right? So I’m going to try to get to them,” Canley shrugged.
John Canley finally received his MOH on 2018, fifty years after he should have received it. Thanks to the efforts of Mr. John Ligato, a witness to the heroism, the heroic actions of Mr. Canley were finally successful in the awarding of the MOH.
In the fog of war, sometimes heroes don't get the recognition that they deserve.
In my opinion, each of those who serve the United States in action are heroes. May we find better methods of identifying and recognizing those worthy of the MOH in a timely fashion.
May God bless Sgt Major Canley and may God bless all who serve this great nation. Thank you Tara.
Thank you Tara. We continue to hear disparagement of our Marines and Military in Vietnam, yet your stories provide the light at the end of the tunnel. The vast majority of our Military fought honorably and ably in a war that they didn't ask to fight.
How can a person not love a guy like this? I have met those leaders whom one did not want to disappoint. Much gratitude for such a man to choose to serve our country. Tremendous individual effort.
"You did stuff for him because you didn’t want to disappoint him. You followed him because he was a true leader"— Respect and honor. What better tribute Thank you Sgt. Major Canley
Sometimes recognition doesn’t come until many years after the fact, but when it does happen it’s a wonderful thing. Canley displayed the same qualities that make a hero that many before him and after him have possessed. Not every hero gets well deserved recognition, but we are grateful for them all. I’m glad Conley received the Medal of Honor before his life was over. Perhaps the respect of his fellow soldiers was reward enough for him.
Absolutely incredible. What a true American hero! Sgt Maj Johnny Lee Canley, May God Bless You and Hold You Close. 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thank you, Tara, for another story of a humble but brave man displaying heroism over and over again!
A Great man who earned his Medal!
Thank you Tara. An awesome tribute to a hero who deserved the MOH in 1968. RIP Marine.
Thank goodness that his unselface bravery was finally recognized and he received the recognition he rightly deserved!

Great story! It's even better because Canley finally got his due recognition with the upgrade to the Medal of Honor.
This is why I love Mondays.
I read stories of American heroes that should be remembered and celebrated always.
Thank you, TR!
