So very true, Tara! Kelly rightfully deserved the CMH, but like so many others felt he was just doing his job. How many others, both in the military and as civilians have given so much without much more than a thank you? Praise to all our day-to-day heroes!
Yes! They should all be remembered even the ones who are less known or who are nameless. John Joseph Kelly exemplifies all our American heroes. He was humble. Fighting for “God and country”. Felt undeserving even after being so brave. I love that he thought of giving his mother his ribbon understanding the worry she had endured on his behalf. A good man. So thankful for all our military men and women and the families who support them. MOH posts are my favorites, Tara.
Every day in any/every environment there stand men and women ready to give that last full measure to insure our safety in what's called a normal day for them. We stand in awe.
Again, a humble Hero! You are right, Tara Ross: "Perhaps today is a good day to remember our long, rich history of brave, selfless heroes, most of whom never made it into a history book." Now - what about Kelly's MOH from the Navy? I have never heard of anyone winning TWO Medals of Honor! There must be a story there, somewhere....
He is humble as most are, not thinking what they did was a big deal. In our 250 years we certainly have seen a lot of heroic action and lost a lot of brave soles. Thanks Tara for reminding us of the forgotten heros.
Pvt. John Joseph Kelly received 2 MOH for his extreme bravery in the same action during WW1. This was another brave young man who didn't think that he had done anything special. He was appreciative and said that he would send it to his mother who hadn't much happiness in her life during the war. He was "too busy" digging trenches at the front to accept the Medal from General Pershing, so the award was presented by the General at a later date.
Perhaps these parents of The Greatest Generation were pretty great themselves. God bless you Mr. Kelly and God bless all who have served or currently serve this great nation. Thank you Tara for another MOH Monday.
So humble,"just doing my job" as most MOH recipients think some others did more than I did. What a wonderful Marine to think one man took out the gunner captured 8 prisoners and was thinking of his poor worried mother. We forget that few had phones in their homes no TV and only radios in some homes, it was a luxury item. 250 years, many wars to keep it, our republic is special and we need to remember what it is and what it stands for.
Aye Tara is such a fine and glorious St. Patrick’s Day ☘️ to pay tribute to good Irish lad in John Kelly. I guess the Moniker of “Fighting Irish” is fitting for this humble yet courageous young man who deserved to receive his Medal of Honor. Hoo Raa Marine and Semper Fi. I’m sure when you reported in to St. Peter you said ‘Another Marine reporting in, I’ve served my time in Hell.’
