Machiavelli suggested the explanation that princes (rulers) would use the public treasury to buy their subjects' affection. He said that had bad outcomes for depleting the treasury, for diminishing the prince's authority, and that it did not succeed in producing the affection the prince had sought to purchase.
Elmer T. Peterson in the 9 December 1951 The Daily Oklahoman, (mis)attributed this to Tytler:
Two centuries ago, a somewhat obscure Scotsman named Tytler made this profound observation: "A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship, then a monarchy".
Our government leaders have shown themselves to be poor financial stewards of almost every area of the people’s lives. The waste and mis-appropriations are a travesty.
A sound policy when dealing with other people's money. Today? I dare say Jefferson would barely recognize the the independent republic he helped create. Thank you, Tara Ross, for the somber memory.
Thank you Tara. My theory is that we don't really have global warming, it is our founding fathers watching today's politicians.
He would 💩 his trousers! 😆
That's the work for the Department of Government Efficiency!

It seems the theme is pretty well explained...

If he was alive today he would sue the government for Unconstitutional Acts. 🤬
Let's just say I don't think the founding fathers would be happy.
Oh, if that were actually done today...

Ditto Tara for sure. 😊

Timeless advice..
I think all our founders would be disgusted at what our politicians spend today! We are not our founders America today...
Seems reasonable to me. Our Government should never spend money on ill defined or undefined things.
A word of wisdom which would do well to be followed today. Thanks for your historical insights, Tara!
Thank you, Tara 💯👍
Shoulda put it in the Constitution. Article I…
