The business of being Founding Fathers begins in the American Révolution, and extends into their time as POTUS. God bless them all for their service and sacrifice in the creation of my country!

Thanks so much for sharing this amazing story. I never knew Monroe was "in" the famous painting, or that he was only 18 years old here.

The presence of Dr. Riker, possibly a temporary volunteer, with Monroe at Trenton, ostensibly to treat any wounded. Yet it was a future president that he treated that day. That was serendipity.

Great read this morning, Prof. Tara! Love the side stories and tidbits of famous events. But “enquiring” minds wants to know who Capt William Washington was..... was he kin to obviously more famous George?

Learned a new piece of history. Monroe is one of quite a few presidents we don’t hear much about and yet he was instrumental at a young age in forging a free country. It’s remarkable that he was proudest of his service at Trenton. Perhaps he felt he did more for the future of the nation there then even as president. Need to learn more about this man.

Thank you Tara Ross for sharing this inspiring story. I did not know that Monroe was at that memorable battle in Trenton. You made the event live vividly in my mind. I appreciate your insights into little known events and contributions from our history. They inspire me to be a better, more engaged, citizen today.

What men of true courage a young America had during the revolutionary war . James Monroe was no exception . He did his duty with no design other than defeat the enemy . Far cry from future politicians of today who falsely claim military service ( sen Blumenthal ) or are dismissed for criminal behavior or claim false rank ( Gov Walz ) thank God for the. WASHINGTON’S. + MONROE’S. of the day !
