Funny that not one WWII history book mentioned it. Great tidbit I bet most of us haven't heard. Thanks Tara.

"Ice cream! We're gonna eat ice cream. And we will eat it every day. In the middle of the night we're singing Ice Cream, we're gonna eat ice cream." (from a Bill Cosby skit, mid 60's)

Thank you Tara. I have never heard this story of Ice cream or the free ice cream as the Lexington was sinking. I imagine that the concrete barges (BRL) were the favorite of many in WW2.

Great story ! Dan is right; something we’ve never heard before ! These kind of stories are great. No doubt ice cream is a morale booster . . . . with temps now in the 90’s, it is always the #1 item at Boy Scout camp . . . . there are 5 big freezers at our camp in Tennessee that are restocked twice a week !

Never heard this before..but it may explain why my dad always had “secret ice cream grandma doesn’t know about”…for his grandchildren…😂💞🇺🇸

After a long period at sea on patrol in Vietnam we pulled in to port, the crew was surprised with bbq steak and beer on the fantail, but no ice cream. What’s up with that! We had no complaints and the morale spiked pretty good. It was a covert operation that no one took responsibility for.

Not surprising, except that it was stocked on American war ships. Ice cream is definitely a comfort food. Great story!

I don’t recall, when on active duty in a war zone, EVER having ice cream available. I did, however, have my first taste of kimchi.
