Wow! Thank heavens for the brave Coffelt.

I know this story but I always wonder how such a poorly planned and manned assassination attempt on the American President could have nearly succeeded.

I hope that the presidential guard who gave his life, Mr.Coffelt, was given an appropriate posthumous award for preventing the assassination. Thank you Tara.

Betsy Tara Ross I don't think of this when I'm discussing the (attempted) assassinations of the POTUS throughout history. I'm aware of it though. I don't if I could have been so lenient, had I been Truman. A cop WAS killed while protecting him, after all....

In all cases , I believe the equation should be simple -

‘ if you take a life, you forfeit your own’ ! 🧐

The beginning of the Nuclear Cold War was at this point in History. Truman's Rebuilding of run down parts of the White House at this time, also added the FIRST PEOC (Presidential Emergency Operations Center). Built underground underneath the Oval Office. Designed to withstand the EARLY types of Atomic bombs in case of Soviet attack during the Cold War during the Truman era.

I never knew about this! What a sad event it was! Today, I do not think they would get as close nor do I think the President would be allowed near a window with a firefight breaking out.

The renovation of the White House required gutting the entire building. Today, when you walk through the various rooms, they all date from the 1950s. The actual rooms were used as landfill and have a ball field built on them.
