Thank you Tara. I did not know any of those things about Harry and Bess Truman but I am not surprised.

I moved to the town where I met my wife when I sat across the isle from her in the 5th grade. We attended Sunday school together and went together off and on through high school. She went off to college and I went off to the Navy. We married after her college graduation in 1968. Similar story in some respects to the Truman's. After 58 years and going, I am still very much in love with the girl who stole my heart in 1956.

What a great insight to Bess & Harry Truman! The strength of character can be seen in their relationship. He did pretty well as President. Thanks, Tara!

A very interesting lady and she was married to a complex man. I mean really who would have ever thought Harry to be a romantic. Thanks Tara.

Great story more about the dedication of one man to the love of his life. Makes me wonder if Bess was playing “hard to get” or if she was testing him to see if he was truly in love with her and being a suitable husband. Whatever the case they made a great couple. I’m sure the decision to drop the atomic bomb weighed heavy on Harry and couldn’t share this with Bess due to his position as the President of the USA but also didn’t want to place that burden on the woman he loved. The second heavy decision of his life. 😢

Sounds like a pretty typical marriage. There are ups and downs, but the proof of the commitment is in sticking together through it all. After several years most marriages evolve from simply romantic love to a deep devotion. Depending on the couple they can grow through the experiences. Their courtship was quite interesting.

Thank you for this endearing sharing. We forget that these folks had personal lives besides their public lives. I'm thankful for Harry's perseverance and for Bess at his side.

The chief usher of the White House wrote a memoir in the mid 1980s.

Mrs. Truman would go home in the summers to spend time with her mother. (DC in July and August are miserable now and God awful before air conditioning.)

So she's gone a couple of months.

She comes back to the White House.

And the next morning, she's in the chief usher's office explaining that somehow the bed broke and could he please take care of it?

My memory is he found her awkwardness and embarrassment utterly charming.

😁

Tara, as always I learned something new from you today. I wish I would have had a history teacher like you when I was growing up. I would be so much better for that.

Thank you!
